Comcast Accounts for 49 Percent of New Broadband Subscribers in 2013: Report

Comcast added more than one million broadband subscribers last year, accounting for 49 percent of the total net additions for the top seventeen largest cable and telephone providers in the US.

This is according to a new study by the Leichtman Research Group, released on Monday. The research found that the top seventeen providers – which represent 93 percent of the market – acquired over 2.6 million net additional high-speed Internet subscribers in 2013.

Recently, Comcast announced its plans to acquire Time Warner Cable, a deal that has received mixed reactions in the media, with many concerned that the deal would give Comcast too much power and control over pricing of broadband-related services. As the deal awaits regulatory approval, it is clear that even without Time Warner, Comcast has a dominant place in the market.

“At the end of 2013, the top broadband providers in the US cumulatively had over 84.3 million subscribers, adding 2.6 million subscribers in the past year,” Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for Leichtman Research Group, Inc said. “With top Telco providers focused on upgrading customers from DSL to fiber broadband services, cable providers accounted for over 80 percent of the net broadband adds in 2013.”


The top broadband providers, including Comcast, AT&T and Verizon, account for 84.3 million subscribers. Cable companies account for 49.3 million broadband subscribers, while telephone companies have 35 million.

A study released last year by the OECD found that broadband subscriptions grew by 3.27 percent in 2012, and fiber subscriptions accounted for 14.9 percent of total broadband subscriptions.
